Welcome to Brazen Church’s Q&A forum. This is a place for everyone in our community to ask and answer questions. We are just getting started, so don’t hesitate to speak up and ask a question that’s been on your mind!
I have been joyously devouring the topics on this blog, especially the ones relating to Hell, ETC, and penal substitution. The gospel is way better than any of us imagined, and it is truly blissful to no longer fear an angry god or torturous afterlife… One area of confusion that I would love to hear you guys unpack is the topic Satan, devils, demons, and where they fit in the picture… Now that we have debunked hell, where does Satan fit? Are there actual spiritual beings at war with my soul, or was all that spiritual warfare just shadow-boxing with already defeated foes? I would love to hear your thoughts!
Hey Mitch, great question. Jacob Wright discusses that a bit in this article (which was published since your question) – http://brazenchurch.com/biblical-satan/
And then follows up on it here – http://brazenchurch.com/god-of-anger/
Personally, I don’t believe in a personified Devil and I am not quite sure where I stand on “demons”.
There are definitely adversarial forces we face in life, and since I don’t believe that people are inherently evil, I think there are evil influences that people in pain tend to tap into before expressing some of the more horrific things we see in humanity.
I’m not sure if that’s related to demonic activity or simply the reality of what we’re capable of as conscious beings.
But from my perspective, the most important distinction is that our own greed, fear, and anger are the primary causes of human misery, rather than some personified external force fighting against us. And thus, the solution is found in our own development and alignment with what Jesus showed us (Beatitudes, Kingdom of Heaven is like.., etc) rather than the defeat of an opposing force.
